A private network has no voice by default

A private 4G or 5G network gives you coverage and data. It does not give you phone calls. There is no circuit-switched voice on 4G and 5G, so a handset on a private network can only make a native call if the network has an IMS behind it.

Without one, sites fall back to over-the-top apps. Those work, but they depend on the app being installed and running, they do not use the native dialler, and they do not handle emergency calls the way a phone does.

An IMS turns the private network into a real phone network: native calling from the dialler, SMS, and short internal numbers, on standard handsets.

What a private deployment needs

A small footprint. A campus or industrial site does not need a national-scale IMS. It needs the same standards-based functions on a handful of servers, on site.

Self-contained operation. Many private networks are deliberately isolated. The IMS has to run without depending on a cloud service or an external operator.

A link to the existing phone system. Most sites already have a PBX or a SIP trunk. Mobile handsets should be able to call desk phones and the outside world through it.

Emergency calling. Emergency calls from the site need to reach the right place, whether that is an on-site control room, the public emergency service, or both.

SMS and alerting. Text messaging over the same IMS, including messages sent by applications for alarms and notifications.

Recording where required. Some environments have to record calls. That is easier to design in than to add later.

Why the IMS is often the missing piece

Several vendors offer a private 4G/5G core. Fewer offer an IMS that is sized and priced for a single site. Operator-grade IMS products are built for millions of subscribers and licensed accordingly, which makes them a poor fit for a few hundred handsets.

Our IMS is the same platform that runs in live operator networks, delivered as a self-contained deployment you own and run. For private networks we license it on a perpetual basis for a single site, with business-hours support.

If you need the mobile core as well, we deliver it through a specialist partner, integrated with the IMS under one commercial agreement.
